Crazy to think that the summer is gone and I am heading back to school. I am always excited to start a new year with new students. I wanted to take this time to talk a little bit about how I use my lessons.
I do not use my lessons to teach content for the first time, although I'm sure this wouldn't be hard to do. I try to set up the time so I am using one of my real-life lessons at least twice a month. I of course try to use a lesson that we are currently going over in class or have done recently, but they don't always.
I hope they reinforce what has previously been taught, but more than that I use them to simply show students what math can be used for - not just for passing tests. This always instantly produces a higher level of engagement and goes a long way to building rapport with students. They quickly pick up on the fact that you are using lessons like this because you care.
