This is a discovery rich task that leads students to discovering the general formula for the volume or a rectangular prism, triangular prism, and cylinder: V = Bh (volume = area of the base times the height).
Concepts: Volume, Rectangular Prism, Triangular Prism, Cylinder
Student Activity: students will use cubes to estimate the volume of boxes and then use their estimations to discover the volume formula
Additional Materials: Unifix cubes or linking cubes are the absolute best way to teach volume and surface area and are used in this lesson.
- Unifix Cubes (100 count) – The brand I use ($15.49)
- Snap Cubes (100 count) – A cheaper linking cube alternative ($10.64)
